Yesterday the vultures circled. I considered taking a shower but given the dogs were disappearing across the dry Hulsey Creek,I suspect something dead really lurked across the way. The disappearing dog act continued this morning so I braved the hike and explored with dog noses as my compass. I soon discovered the remains of an elk, covered with buzzing flies and protected by the vultures roosted in the nearby snag.
I searched for other sign that might give me some clues as to the proud owner of the elk,but mostly I found nothing. The ground is covered with flowers and grass and tracks are hidden in their memories and reveal no clues.
Check out the gallery for the gruesome pictures of the elk and the roosting vultures.
